David R. Barton was born on the 4th of July 1805 in a small town by the Hudson River. He made a life in edge tools, going through various partnerships and growing a company that, at its high point, was producing $100,000 worth of edge tools per years in the late 19th century. This 14” draw knife bears a mark “D.R. Barton 1832 Rochester, NY”, which dates its production to somewhere between 1873 and 1880. A subsequent owner carved their initials into this special tool, along with the date, in 1910.
