Ernest Koken was a German immigrant who got his start glazing artwork onto shaving mugs in the later 19th century. Koken was a determined designer, however, and eventually patented his own hydraulic barber chairs, which became the foundation for one of the most successful equipment manufacturers in the country. This early 20th century mirror was most likely a part of a larger barber’s back station, but is a very handsome stand alone mirror and a testament to the quality of Koken products. Classically inspired details on this simple but stately mirror include a solid oak frame with a carved egg and dart border as well as bevel edged mirror glass.
