Our historical information has this piece originating at Michigan State University in the Natural Sciences department. The later 19th century vintage is evident in its solid construction and absolutely beautiful design. Heavily carved ornate corbels sit at each corner to support the beautifully refinished top. The shallow drawers, fitted with their original white porcelain knobs, were used to store natural specimens, such as butterflies and other insects, hence their ability to open and extend from either side of the cabinet. A simply phenomenal piece.
