When Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, a wave of Egyptophilia swept over Britain and the United States. Design motifs trended toward the exotic imagery of Pharaohs, pyramids, and hieroglyphics. This solid bronze decorative elevator door panel is an absolutely fantastic example of Egyptian Revival fantasy design. Ibises soar amidst lotus flowers and butterflies, while a hippo, otter, and fish swim along the bottom. An upper cartouche features a figural panel of fictionalized ancient Egyptians and symbols.
