Established in 1859 in New York, the Herman Kohlbusch Balance Company was founded by a German manufacturer, C. Herman Kohlbusch Sr. This pocket scale can be seen in all the scientific supply catalogs from 1888 to as late as 1943, making it a distinctive Kohlbusch product. The 1888 catalog lists this scale as either a pocket assay scale, pocket diamond scale, or pocket surgeon scale, the accompanying weights being the only way to tell the difference. This particular pocket scale includes carat weights making it a diamond scale.
