Julien Friez started as the superintendent of the Ottmar Mergenthaler Co., which manufactured linotype machines and precision instruments. Eventually, Friez established his own company, the Belfort Instrument Company, in 1876. The Belfort Instrument Company was a leader in the development of meteorological instruments through a partnership with the newly formed US Weather Bureau. This industrial anemometer, featuring a recreated cupped top assembly and base, bears the stamp of Friez himself, marking the gauge as authentic. Originally used to measure the strength and speed of the wind, this unique piece would make a statement in any environment.
