Rochus Heinisch was a German immigrant who began manufacturing surgical instruments, and later tailoring and sailmaking cutlery, in Newark, New Jersey around 1835. Heinisch was the first patentee of steel tailoring scissors in the United States and these particular oversized shears bear their patent hallmark above the brass cap as well as the engraved name of “R. Heinisch” on the blade, dating them to circa 1859. An excellent piece of American manufacturing history.
