Starting in 1864, the Sargent Manufacturing Company, also known as Sargent & Co., began manufacturing hardware in New Haven, CT. During World Wars I and II, much of the plant’s production capacity was converted from hardware manufacturing to the production of items needed for the war effort. The post-war era saw Sargent & Co. focusing on locks and door-related mechanisms. This pair of brass door knobs with matching door plates reflects the organic, floral motifs that dominated the Art Nouveau movement. Ca. 1900.
