Benton Murdoch Spruance was a Pennsylvania born artist of much renown, specializing in etching and lithography. Spruance was actively making art from his college years at the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the 1920’s until his death in 1967. This portrait of a young Abraham Lincoln demonstrates Spruance’s personal style of soft-edged figures and deep shading. Created in 1940, the lithograph is an edition of 50 and signed by Spruance.
